Sort each room into keep, sell, donate, recycle and discard groups.
Deal with storage areas early, including the garage, basement, attic, shed and spare closets.
Gather sturdy boxes, packing paper, tape, markers, labels and protective materials.
Begin packing seasonal décor, books, guest-room items and other nonessentials.
Label every box with its destination room and a short description of the contents.
Create a numbering system, such as Kitchen 1 of 8, so missing boxes are easier to notice.
Start a move folder for the estimate, confirmation, lease or closing documents and important receipts.
Ask the moving company which items it cannot transport and make a separate plan for them.

Confirm possession times, lease requirements or closing details for both homes.
If either address is an apartment or managed building, reserve the elevator or loading area and confirm permitted move hours.
Ask the property manager whether a certificate of insurance, parking plan or other move documentation is required.
Arrange to start, stop or transfer electricity, gas, water and internet service at the correct times.
Submit your official USPS change-of-address request and keep the confirmation information.
Update your address with banks, insurers, employers, schools, healthcare providers and important subscriptions.
Review renters or homeowners insurance and ask the provider when coverage changes between addresses.
Plan safe supervision for children and pets during the busiest parts of moving day.
Continue packing one room or category at a time, leaving daily essentials for later.

Reconfirm the move date, arrival window and best contact number with your mover.
Review the addresses, floor levels, access details and inventory you submitted.
Report additions, removals or newly discovered access problems before moving day.
Confirm the expected crew, vehicle, billing method and accepted payment methods.
Confirm who is responsible for furniture disassembly, packing and appliance preparation.
Verify elevator reservations, parking arrangements, gate codes and building contacts.
Refill necessary prescriptions and gather medical, school and pet records.
Arrange cleaning and a final walkthrough for the old home when applicable.
Aim to have most nonessential belongings packed and labeled by the end of this phase.

Finish packing everything except the items needed for the final days and first night.
Build a clearly marked OPEN FIRST box for the new home.
Pack personal documents, valuables, medication and essential electronics separately to keep with you.
Back up important computers and devices, then photograph cable connections before disconnecting them.
Remove wall-mounted items and repair or document the condition of the old home as required.
Use up, donate or properly dispose of food and household products that will not be moved.
Confirm how refrigerators, freezers and other appliances must be prepared if they are part of the move.
Check the forecast and prepare a flexible plan for heat, rain, snow or ice.
Clear hallways, stairs, driveways and entrances at both addresses.

Keep children and pets away from doors, stairs, equipment and active loading areas.
Walk the crew through the home and identify anything fragile, unusually heavy or not being moved.
Point out access concerns, parking instructions and building rules before loading begins.
Keep identification, medication, valuables, keys and essential documents with you.
Be available for questions, but keep pathways and work areas clear.
Use the room labels and destination plan to guide unloading at the new address.
Check closets, cabinets, drawers, storage spaces, the garage and outdoor areas before leaving.
Confirm that doors and windows are secured and complete any required key handoff.
